July 17-19, 2023 | Singapore EXPO | Singapore
Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence
AAAI presents the inaugural 2023 Summer Symposium Series, to be held July 17-19, 2023, in Singapore. The Summer Symposium Series is the newest in the annual set of meetings run in parallel at a common site. It is designed to bring colleagues together in an intimate forum while at the same time providing a significant gathering point for the AI community. The format of the series allows participants to devote considerably more time to feedback and discussion than typical one-day workshops. It is an ideal venue for bringing together new communities in emerging fields.
The symposia are intended to encourage presentation of speculative work and work in progress, as well as completed work. Ample time should be scheduled for discussion. Novel programming, including the use of target problems, open-format panels, working groups, or breakout sessions, is encouraged. Most participants of the symposia will be selected on the basis of statements of interest or abstracts submitted to the symposia chairs; some open registration will be allowed. All symposia are limited in size, and participants will be expected to attend a single symposium.
The program will include the following five symposia over the two- and one-half-days:
July 17 – July 19
Second Symposium on Human Partnership with Medical AI: Design, Operationalization, and Ethics
July 18 – July 19
July 18 Only

Building Connections: From Human-Human to Human-AI Collaboration
Human-AI collaboration is increasingly becoming prevalent in various domains, ranging from healthcare to finance to education. However, current AI systems often fall short in providing natural interactions, especially in the context of teamwork. Unlike current human-AI interactions, human-human interactions are rich and complex, with multi-modal information exchange for task completion, as well as trust-building, dispute resolution, and negotiation.
This workshop aims to bring together experts from two different areas: human-AI collaboration and human-human collaboration to explore potential connections and synergies between the two. The symposium will provide a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities in designing AI systems that can interact with humans in a more natural and collaborative way. The workshop will consist of a series of interactive sessions, including talks, panels, and group discussions, aimed at fostering collaborations and identifying potential research directions in this area.
Key Aims:
- To identify the challenges and opportunities in designing AI systems that can collaborate with humans in a natural way.
- To explore potential connections and synergies between human-AI and human-human collaboration.
- To foster collaborations between researchers from human-AI collaboration and human-human collaboration.
Topics
The following are a (non-exhaustive) list topics that will be of interest in the symposium:
- Algorithms for collaborative agents with novel partner and/or humans
- Human partner modeling
- Communication in human-AI/multi-agent teams
- Coordination and conflict resolution in human-AI teams
- Cognitive and affective aspects of human-AI collaboration
- Robustness of collaborative AI agents
- Explainability for collaborative AI agents
- Trust, safety and reliability of collaborative AI agents
- Large language models for human-AI collaboration
Format:
The symposium will involve a mix of activities including keynotes, paper sessions, breakout brainstorming sessions, panel discussions, and poster sessions.
Submissions:
We are accepting paper submissions for position, review, or research articles in two formats: (a) short papers (2-4 pages) and (b) full papers (6-8 pages). For accepted submissions, authors will have the option to publish their work in an open access proceedings site.
Papers can be submitted through the AAAI Summer Symposia EasyChair site here: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=summerseries23, selecting the appropriate track and theme.

Embodied Intelligence
AI has recently begun to pay more attention to embodied intelligence. In psychology, the idea of embodied cognition stipulates that the high-level mental processes, including conceptualization and reasoning, are intimately linked with the seemingly “low-level” of processing in an intelligent entity (human or animal) involving the motor and sensory systems. Some AI research in recent years has begun to direct its attention onto this aspect of intelligent functioning, and the field has seen an increasing number of papers and workshops. In this workshop we propose to specifically look at aspects of embodied intelligence that involve the interactions between humans and robots – human-human, human-robot, and robot-robot. Report on research on all other aspects of embodied intelligence are welcome.
Topics
Papers related to, but not limited to, the following issues are welcome:
- How considerations of embodied intelligence impact the representational and computational issues of AI agents
- Scene graphs and other representational structures appropriate for capturing knowledge for embodied agents
- Visual attention issues on embodied agents
- What information is important for human-robot interactions, inspired by human-human interactions
- Appropriate behaviors of robots in human social environment
- Recognizing human intentions through video and other cues
Submissions
We welcome submissions in two formats: (a) short papers (2-4 pages) and (b) full papers (6-8 pages). Papers should be formatted using the standard AAAI template. Submissions should be done through the AAAI EasyChair Submission site.
Selection of submissions follows a juried process where authors may expect to receive light feedback. Accepted submissions will be published in AAAI symposia proceedings for authors who wish to be included.
- Submissions due: June 30, 2023
- Author Notification: Author notifications will come within 10 days of submission.
