Call for Diversity and Inclusion Activities
Participation in AI by groups that are underrepresented or marginalized is necessary to reflect society’s diversity, raise awareness for AI’s potential or harms experienced by their members, and bring in a multiplicity of viewpoints. Diversity has many facets, including race, ethnicity, gender, (academic) age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, cultural background, and intersections thereof.
We invite submissions of proposals for activities that help broaden diverse participation in the AI field.
Examples of activities are workshops to discuss present challenges and propose changes related to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in AI, underexplored research perspectives to benefit underrepresented communities (e.g. low-resource languages), respective panels and roundtables, or mentoring sessions to empower underrepresented researchers. Equally encouraged are activities revolving around inclusive community building, networking and social gatherings, diversity lunches, outreach activities and reports, and activities to expose K-12 students to AI. For examples of successful events from last year see: https://aaai.org/aaai-conference/aaai-24-diversity-inclusion-activities/
Proposals should be short (2 pages, in pdf) and should address the following:
- What activity is proposed and its specific objectives?
- Who will be the chair of the activity?
- What is the target audience (e.g., academics, industry, graduate students, undergraduate students)?
- What is the expected number of participants?
- Will the activity be by invitation only or will it involve an open call for participation/registration/submission? What is the expected timeline (including submission deadline and notification)? What are the plans to advertise?
- Duration of the proposed activity (e.g., 1/2 day, 1 day, 2 hours), and when during the conference program should the activity be held (e.g. during the main conference, workshops, in the evening).
- Funding needed (if any) and potential sources of funding.
- Volunteer support needed (if any). Specify how many, for how long, and for what (e.g. “two volunteers, for 0.5 hr, to distribute materials”).
- Please describe any specific needs you have for audiovisual or room related needs. This includes requirements like chair setup, extra power strips, whiteboards, poster boards etc.
Accepted diversity and inclusivity activities will be granted up to three complimentary registrations.
