Duke Computer Scientist Wins $1 Million Artificial Intelligence Prize, A ‘New Nobel’

October 12, 2021

Duke professor Cynthia Rudin is the second recipient of the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for pioneering socially responsible AI. She is being cited for “pioneering scientific work in the area of interpretable and transparent AI systems in real-world deployments, the advocacy for these features in highly sensitive areas such as social justice and medical diagnosis, and serving as a role model for researchers and practitioners.”

Regina Barzilay wins $1m Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Squirrel AI Award

Professor Regina Barzilay of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), is the first winner of the Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity, in recognition for her work developing machine learning models to develop antibiotics and other drugs, and to detect and diagnose breast cancer at early stages.
