Using Statistics Gained From Corpora in a Knowledge-Based NLP System

Knowledge acquistion is a bottleneck for broadcoverage knowledge-based natural language proceasing systems. Statistical techniques can help by providing automatic knowledge acquisition as well as helping to focus manual acquisition effort. In the following paper we discuss how we automatically acquire syntactic and semantic knowledge from a corpus for use in the SOLOMON natural language understanding system.
