Abstract:
This paper describes an experimental evaluation of the diagnostic concepts implemented in a prototypical case-based reasoner (CBR), called Epaion. The reasoner operates in the domain of in-flight fault diagnosis and prognosis of aviation subsystems, particularly jet engines. The evaluation used actual aircraft accidents and incident cases, which were simulated to assess the effectiveness of Epaion in diagnosing failures. Results of this evaluation, together with a brief description of Epaion, are presented. Additionally, these results are compared with the resuits achieved by the rule-based and the model-based processes of another reasoner which operates in the same domain.
