From Assertion to Belief: The Role of Linguistic Data in the Practice of Belief Ascription

This paper criticizes the widely held belief that we normally arrive at views about the propositional attitudes of other agents by simulating their mental processes. It maintains that we are instead guided primarily by the assertions of other agents.
