Abstract:
There are many ways to think about the stable, individual differences we call personality. Some approaches stress genetic or biological factors. Others are concerned with the cognitive strategies people bring to bear on social situations. Emotion theorists stress the importance of emotional factors in personality, and several have proposed cognitive-emotional structures as its key building blocks. But from a developmental perspective, personality grows, crystallizes, and consolidates over time. It is not bestowed by a particular set of factors. Rather, it is something that emerges, organically, over many years.
