Abstract:
A variety of technologies have been developed to index and manage information contained within unstructured documents and information sources. Although often originally developed for textual data many of these information management tools have been applied successfully to imperfectly indexed multimedia data. Ongoing progress in all these technologies is creating opportunities to develop more sophisticated tools to extract, manage and combine knowledge from multiple sources. Multimedia data itself presents new challenges and opportunities. Unlike text multimedia data lacks an obvious descriptive vocabulary, thus it is unclear how to index the content, even if robust analysis tools are available. The integration of existing techniques already provides partial solutions to some problems of multimedia knowledge management. However, open questions remain beyond current technology limitations.
