This editorial provides an introduction to current AI research on computationally created artefacts as well asto the papers and topics covered by this special issue on computational creativity

Author Biographies

Simon Colton, Imperial College


Simon Colton is a senior lecturer in Computing at Imperial College,London. He leads the Computational Creativity Group(www.doc.ic.ac.uk/ccg) which investigates the application of AI andHCI techniques to creative applications in mathematics; graphicdesign; the visual arts and video game design. In particular,Dr. Colton has developed the HR system which has produced mathematicaldiscoveries worthy of the mathematical literature; is currentlyworking with video games companies on developing adaptive games; andhas developed The Painting Fool: an automated artist which willhopefully be taken seriously as a creative painter in its own right -one day (www.thepaintingfool.com). He served on the AISB committeefrom 2001 to 2007, serves on the automated reasoning workshopcommittee and the Computational Creativity Conference steering group,and is one of the leaders of the AI and Games Academic/Industryresearch network (www.aigamesnetwork.org). He is the author of morethan 100 research papers and his research has won awards bothnationally (BCS/CPHC distinguished dissertation award 2001) andinternationally (AAAI best paper award 2000).http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~sgc

Ramon Lopez de Mantaras, Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)


Ramon Lopez de Mantaras Badia is a Research Professor of the CSIC(Spanish National Research Council) and Director of the ArtificialIntelligence Research Institute of the CSIC. He holds an M.Sc. inComputer Science from the University of California Berkeley, aPh.D. in Physics from the University of Toulouse III, and a Ph.D. inComputer Science from the Technical University of Barcelona. Hisresearch focuses on Case-Based Reasoning, Autonomous Robots, and AI &Music. Former Editor-in-Chief of Artificial IntelligenceCommunications, he is currently Associate Editor of the ArtificialIntelligence Journal, and editorial board member of otherinternational journals including the Autonomous Robots Journal and AIMagazine. He is an ECCAI Fellow and recipient of several awardsincluding the "City of Barcelona" Research Prize. Oliviero Stock, IRST


Oliviero Stock is an IRST Senior Fellow. He has been at the Istitutoper la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica (IRST) since 1988 and was itsDirector from 1997 to 2001. His activity is mainly in AI, naturallanguage processing (including verbal humor), intelligent interfacesand cognitive technologies. He is the author of two hundredpeer-reviewed papers and author or editor of twelve volumes. He hasalso been an invited speaker at over sixty conferences; participant orcoordinator at over twenty panels. He has been Chairman of theEuropean Coordinating Committee for AI, President of the Associationfor Computational Linguistics and of the Italian AI Association and isan ECCAI Fellow and a AAAI Fellow.  http://cit.fbk.eu/stock
