Abstract

This paper reports on a model for grounded construction learning. We take a usage-based approach and propose learning operators that together allow a learner to become a sufficient speaker and comprehender of English phrases of significant complexity. The model is evaluated in tutor-learner robot experiments. We show that the learner robot is able to acquire a basic grammar of English in situated interactions. The learner robot is able to successfully produce and understand English determined noun phrases, determined adjective noun phrases and prepositional phrases. The acquired construction grammar consists of lexical, functional and phrasal constructions.
