The Fourth International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 98)

January 29, 2023

Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence

The Third International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining was held August 27 – 31, 1998, in New York, New York. The conference was collocated with the Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB)

Business and scientific endeavors now routinely gather large quantities of data that can help with understanding critical problems and with making strategic and tactical decisions. However, manual analysis becomes difficult as databases grow, and techniques for discovering and extracting knowledge automatically become necessary.

The Fourth International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD-98) addressed the science and technology of automated discovery, drawing from the fields of statistics, databases, machine learning, data visualization, high performance computing, knowledge acquisition, and knowledge-based systems. Besides scientific and technical contributions from the latest research and applications, the 1998 program also featured free tutorials given by leading experts, demonstrations by leading tool vendors, and several invited talks summarizing the state of the art and looking forward to the future. The field’s interdisciplinary nature facilitated the cross-fertilization of ideas, and this conference was collocated with the 24th International Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB-98).

Best Paper Awards

The following papers were chosen from among all KDD-98 plenary papers and were judged on the basis of presentation, relevance, significance, and originality of their contribution to the field of KDD. These papers are the best of the best. Acceptance alone to KDD-98 is a considerable achievement: only 68 papers were accepted out of 247 submitted. Each award carries a commemorative plaque and a check for $1000, sponsored by Knowledge Stream Partners (thanks to Robert van der Hooning).
