Supporting Mechatronic Design Via a Distributed Network of Intelligent Agents

W. Birmingham, T. Darr, E. Durfee, A. Ward and M. Wellma

National manufacturing networks have the potential to provide tremendous improvement in the design and manufacturing process. In particular, these networks will enable designers to quickly access information sources and design services. Rather than being passive, we envision networks with embedded intelligence, where agents on the network can coordinate actions to actually create designs: this includes making design decisions, or advising human decision makers.
